Immersion Learning at Miyabi

Language immersion at Miyabi involves English and Japanese language being used to teach children to learn through purposeful play. We follow the ‘one practitioner, one language’ method giving children the opportunity to use both languages, changing seamlessly each nursery day. 

Learning a new language also involves the learning of a new culture (Allwright & Bailey 1991) and ‘…teachers of language are also teachers of culture’ (Byram 1989). As we teach British and Japanese values (respect, individual liberty, self reliance and considerateness) in both respective languages, children at Miyabi experience a unique insight into the best of both worlds as we celebrate two unique cultures.

According to neuroscientist Sam Wang (2011), one of the main advantages of bilingualism is enhanced cognitive development. Neural pathways are strengthened as a result of learning two languages, and benefits beyond of language acquisition include:

  • A stronger ability to block out distractions and focus
  • Greater cognition, organisation and analysis skills
  • The ability to sort and prioritise more efficiently
  • A greater ability to problem solve and switch between tasks
